Ani DiFranco on Being a Mindful Mama

Ani DiFranco on Being a Mindful Mama
posted by Mindful Mama

This interview was filmed in May of 2008 to kick-off our brand, but is timeless. Ani DiFranco is a pioneer of women's music.  Nominated for several Grammys, Ani owns her own record label - Righteous Babe Records-and now her own performance venue in her home State, New York. She was recently on NPR's World Café, Jay Leno, and the cover of Mothering Magazine. Ani is a self-proclaimed feminist, participated in the march for women's lives in Washington DC in 2004 and was the first musician to be honored with the "Woman of Courage Award" by the National Organization of Women in 2006. Ani's daughter, Petah, was born in November of 2006 at home.

This video generated an amazing discussion about what it means to be a mindful mama. Check out art, photo and essay contest submissions on our "What Does it Mean to Be a Mindful Mama" forum.

The grand prize winner of the Mindful Mama contest was awarded an all expense paid trip to see Ani DiFranco perform in NYC. Two nights at the Westin New York at Times Square, spa package and babysitter included.

Be sure to check-out Rites of Passage, our next forum/contest on Mother's Day, 2009.

I agree with Heather. Also, she always reminds me that the challenges I face are shared by many other people which is very encouraging to me.

well, my my my.... it's about time... 27 months later and petah inspired (and will continue to inspire) her mother to do exactly what she does best... self expression though motherhood... the most profound gymnastics of nuturing...and i on the other hand will do exactly the same thing. yes righteous folks... there's a bun in the oven! first time prego! looking forward to spilling my guts. and winning myself something wonderful. *the music and the hope for a love keep me alive*

I had an au naturale water brith three short months ago...My darling daughter was born with Ani crooning in the background! Days before the birth I found myself listeaning to her Canon Double Disc over and over so of course I had it playing when my baby's head finally popped out.

A child can teach you so much... I think more than we could ever teach them.

As always, in the most eloquent and heartfelt way, Ani gets to the core of her experiences...why would motherhood for her be any different? She is an awesome person and inspiring artist. I'm totally crazy about her and just for the record, I think she's gorgeous!

It is amazing that the same poet that has lead me through other times in my life now sheds light on the parenting journey as well. I live in buffalo and every time we drive past her church my daughters yell out in excitement, and I am grateful for her example in not just my life, but theirs. Thank-you for posting this.

Ani, you are an inspiration to me, as a woman, a writer, and most importantly, as a mother. I'm blessed to be able to say my daughter will grow up with the music and presence of such a beautiful woman such as yourself. Thank you for all you've shared and for all the strength you've given me throughout my life. -trish

My daughter gave me a love for life and a chance at eternal and unconditional love...to see her grow from a baby suckling on my breast for milk to a little lady with blind love for all humans and respect for all living things is to see a little righteous babe in the making...thanks Ani for all that you do for it helped me get through the roughest parts of my life...A,TX

Nice interview EXCEPT... is she KIDDING?? Barack Obama?? Wow another "educated" & dangerously mis-informed political folksinger. On youtube look up "Bilderberg Group", "Endgame Trailer", "North American Union", "Council On Foreign Relations" & "New World Order". Then know that Obama secretly attended Bilderberg this year in Chantilly, VA... along w/ Henry Kissinger, Hillary Clinton, David Rockefeller, Ben Bernackie & various other of the world's most powerful. They are planning an Orwellian, Fascist Global Gov't. Obama is also a member of the Council On Foreign Relations. Wake up B4 it's too late!

Thank you, ani, for your example for me. I have been through alot, some may say. Currently, I am a extraordinary mama of my integral six-year-old boy. I am a blessed woman to be able to wake up daily to amazement; my son. I have, also, done quite a bit of work on myself, yet your music and poetry contributes daily to who I consider myself to be as a mama and a woman. What a blessing for me to have one of my (the other is Tori Amos) favorite songstresses become a mama, also. Thank you, ani, for your words of, what i say is, irreproachable maturity. I love you, ani...ferrin

Ani is more beautiful to me evey time i see/hear her. I understand why she never pushed to be "main stream" however, i wish she was because EVERYONE could learn from her. She's amazing and she has never ever let me down. (which is good b/c i have the righteous babe tattood on my arm!)

The first time my daughter heard Ani (I was listening to Ani in the car) she said, "That woman is not even singing. How can anyone like her?". Now my daughter is 20 years old, and is a big Ani fan, able to quote Ani's lyrics in total. Ani's songs help my daughter and I connect. Oh, and I have a 13 year old son who loves her, too!
