As a mom of preschool twins, I understand how frustrating it can be trying to navigate “self” and “mom” and a new lifestyle while trying to make it all look effortless. As a style coach to other moms, I’ve found that the best way to do that is with a little preparation and learning to “wear it like you mean it.”
10 Tips for a Stylish Pregnancy
- Let your pre-pregnant style be your guide. There are so many maternity and non-maternity options available today that you don’t have to change your style signatures because you’re pregnant. Dress to fit your body, today. During pregnancy and afterward, dress for the size you are now and don’t torture yourself over the number (size) on the tag.
- Think sleek. Monochromatic or tonal ensembles that fit well and are accented by jewelry are super chic. Look for fabrics that hug the right curves and skim over the rest. Thin pieces that can be layered are an easy way to make a spare wardrobe work hard because you can mix & match it all. V-necks, sleeveless tops, empire seams, and ruching are all your friends—done best in natural fibers with a little stretch mixed in.
- Seek out, and invest if necessary, in a few key pieces that make you feel beautiful. Most of the time that means a fabulous pair of maternity jeans, a silky wrap top, a great tunic, a comfortable but chic dress, a simple fitted cardigan and at least one pair of dressy wedge-shoes and a pair of ballet flats.
- The bra. Before, during and after pregnancy—some of the most noticeable changes are in the bust area. Not only the size of your breasts but the width of your chest and rib cage. Support is a must. And comfort, for sure! Keep tabs on your size and purchase accordingly. A great bra accentuates a great asset and will make you look slimmer post-baby.
- Panties? Go for comfortable low-rise and skip the crazy maternity ones.
- Accessorize! Pregnant or not, accessories make or break a look. Necklaces, cute earrings, some chunky bangles, and belts all amp up an outfit and give it some life.
- Love your new skin. Your skin may change during and after pregnancy. A routine that you can stick to, works for your skin type and skin concerns is best. Great skin is a result of care, hydration and SPF—and it means you can wear less makeup and still look vibrant.
- Do your makeup in under two minutes. Go for maximum effect with minimal effort: Highlighter, concealer, cheek and lip combo stain eyelash curler + mascara. 2 minutes, flat.
- Take care of your hair. Get a really good cut, glossy color, great products and the tools to style it well. Don’t give up on your hair because you don’t have time for yourself and don’t assume that short hair is easier. Hair that is healthy and rich looking that can be put into a simple low ponytail is by far the easiest way to go.
- Pick your baby bag. Once baby comes, you’ll feel more put-together and organized if you have a bag that suits your needs and your style. As a fashion girl, I had some primo bags. But because they couldn’t be washed, I didn’t use them very long. Make sure yours is as cute as it is utilitarian. Consider using a divine tote, not a precious one but a great one, as your “baby bag” since it becomes your purse too.
